The Best of Both Worlds: Waterfront Retirement in the City

Apr 16, 2024

The Admiral at the Lake offers the best of both worlds—an active, urban setting in an iconic city AND a location on Chicago’s famous lakefront. As residents of a waterfront retirement community, seniors living at The Admiral at the Lake can take full advantage of all there is to enjoy on the shore of Lake Michigan.

The Chicago Lakefront Trail

The Admiral at the Lake is the only waterfront retirement community in Chicago. Lincoln Park and the Chicago Lakefront Trail are right outside our front door and offer a variety of outdoor amenities and opportunities for active seniors.

Parks and beaches

Of course, being a waterfront retirement community means access to the beach or—at the Admiral at the Lake—beaches. Beach picnics are a favorite summer pastime and there are a number of options from which residents can choose. Outside, Foster Beach is a seven-minute walk. Kathy Osterman Beach is a short 15 minutes away. Directly to our south along the lakefront trail, residents find Montrose Beach and Montrose Dog Beach. Both are adjacent to The Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

If you’d rather dine than picnic, the parkland on the shore of Lake Michigan offers casual and fine dining destinations such as The Lakefront Restaurant at Theatre at the Lake. Further afield, residents can visit Green City Market, Lincoln Park Zoo or the Uptown, Edgewater, Lakeview, and Lincoln Park neighborhoods to dine, shop, or stroll.

Walking and biking

The paved, 18-mile lakefront trail follows the Lake Michigan shoreline, providing incredible spaces and views for walkers and cyclists in all seasons. The Admiral at the Lake’s own resident walking group meets every day to stay active and explore the Uptown and Edgewater neighborhoods along the trail. In the winter months, you’ll even see cross country skiing along the lake.

Golf and tennis

Lincoln Park’s 9-hole, Sydney Marovitz golf course is five minutes away from The Admiral at the Lake. Adjacent to the golf course, residents can play tennis at the Waveland Park Tennis Courts.

An active waterfront retirement community

Research shows an important link between social connections and exercise for senior wellbeing. The Admiral at the Lake offers events year-round to help residents stay engaged and entertained, including workshops, trips to local cultural destinations, and regular meetings of resident-sponsored clubs. In addition to options along our beautiful lakefront, residents can stay active indoors with our wellness facilities, including a gym and a heated indoor pool. Our library, gardens, and terrace are other amenities that residents can enjoy any time of day.

Life on the lake at The Admiral

With such an ideal location, The Admiral at the Lake is perfect for residents who want to take advantage of everything Chicago has to offer.
