That’s what the residents of The Admiral of the Lake enjoy. In addition to attending fitness and art classes, Admiral residents have a strong desire to share and expand their academic knowledge.

Higher Education

Their desire for learning has been so apparent that The University of Chicago accepted the invitation of The Admiral at the Lake’s Lifelong Learning Committee to offer select courses exclusively for Admiral residents since the fall of 2016.

Art

Many of us have dabbled in artistic endeavors at some point in our lives. Admiral residents enjoy pursuing their artistic interests in the creative arts studio, learning new techniques and revealing skills they never knew they had.  Some of the community-guided experiences that may be offered include learning to sew, sculpt, make pottery, and various types of painting.

Music and Dance

Have you always wanted to learn ballroom, tap, or salsa dancing? Or, has learning to play the guitar or piano been your lifelong dream? With such a knowledgeable group of people, the possibilities for casual community-led lessons or formal dance classes are almost limitless.

Fitness

To enable every Admiral resident to maintain optimal wellness, Donna Lakinger, fitness coordinator, has developed numerous classes to promote good posture, strength, and balance to prevent injury, pain and falls. With more than a decade of experience, Donna holds a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology and a bachelor’s degree in Health Studies and is Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certified, an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor and Senior Fitness Certified.

In addition to improving flexibility, muscle strength, and circulation through the practice of yoga, there are a number of community-led aerobic, tai chi, and swimming classes held at the fitness center at The Admiral and at several nearby parks.

Tech

While some adults dread the thought of sitting in front of a screen, many Admiral residents are embracing technology. For example, Chicago’s The Admiral at the Lake’s resident-driven tech committee has facilitated a resident portal which offers tech classes, wi-fi, a media room, and several computer stations for residents to use.

Lifelong Learning

The Admiral at the Lake’s resident-directed committees ensure community members get everything they’re looking for. The Lifelong Learning committee has made great strides to ensure that residents have adequate opportunities to continue learning.

As a continuing care community dedicated to supporting the personal independence, health and wellness of residents, The Admiral at the Lake refuses to use the terms retirement community or senior living. Resident movers and shakers continue to work for the betterment of Chicago and the world. To learn more, call 773.433.1801 or click here.
